Collection Consolidation

It has occurred to me recently that not only do I have WAY too many cards, but that I really need to do something about it. The original plan was to sell a ton of them on ebay and use all of that Paypal to buy a small number of cards that I REALLY want. That part of the experiment has been fun, but I'm still left with six 5,000 count boxes full of baseball cards. I'm sure there are others out there who have dealt with a similar task, so for those of you who have, how have you gone about it? How did you decided what to keep and what to get rid of? Did you get anything in return, or did you just give them away? Thanks for the input, guys.

  1. I sold basically all the cards that I could easily replace if I really wanted to some day... like all my 1987 Topps... and sets like that. I pulled those into 5000 count boxes and sold them for $20-$30 a piece on Craigslist.

  2. I like what Sam said for regular blah stuff. Blow it out cheap! If you can get a table at a decent show very inexpensively, and you have enough okay stuff to display, you could also package a bunch of cards up for a buck a lot (grab bag style) and sell all the others in $1/50c/25c boxes. I think it really depends on what you have.

Plus, if you do a show, you might be able to trade for something you want.

I've gone the grab bag route before with stacks of base cards. Very easy sales at a show or flea market, espcially with 50+ cards per $1. There's a guy at a show around here who has 300+ card bricks for $1 each. Nothing great, but fun grabs, and he puts something nice on one or each end as a teaser. I grabbed a Roger Clemens Elite Series insert for $1 with all those extra cards for free.

  3. I was just reading back a ways on your blog. Did you ever decide what to do with all the cards?
