I was a little taken back by some sticker shock, when I saw some of the prices on even just the Topps Baseball product. Maybe it has just been that long, but I don't remember single packs of Topps' flagship release being quite that high.

Either way, my eyes quickly made their way to their WWE product. Eventually, I decided to try my luck on a box of 2020 Fully Loaded. This is a high-end release from Topps, and each box includes just one fully-encased and sealed autographed card of a WWE superstar. I did pretty well with mine, too, pulling a Renee Young autographed kiss card, numbered 9/25.

Renee Young was along-time WWE employee, starting as a backstage interviewer with NXT, and eventually doing commentary for matches. In 2018, she became the first woman to call an entire episode of Monday Night Raw, and soon became a full-time member of their commentary team. Most recently, she hosted WWE Backstage, alongside a rotating cast of co-hosts that included Paige, Booker T, and CM Punk, among others. Soon after the show's cancellation last year, she left the WWE, and now goes by her real name of Renee Paquette.
Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-71982512977865830832020-09-04T19:29:00.004-05:002020-09-04T19:29:54.893-05:00Alex Iafallo Autographed Card
Fargo, ND isn't the biggest city by any means, but it is big enough to have a couple minor league and junior league teams. Our home hockey club is the Fargo Force of the USHL. It may not be as big as the Canadian junior leagues, but it is the most prestigious in the States, and there are quite a few who find success in the NHL

One of the more recent former Force players to make a permanent home in the NHL, is Alex Iafallo. After playing two seasons in Fargo, he played all four years of college hockey at Minnesota-Duluth, before signing a contract with the Kings in 2017.

Of course, I had to get something of his from his rookie year, so I picked up this 2017-18 SP Authentic Future Watch autographed card, numbered 55/999.

He also scored his first career hat trick that season, getting all three of LA's goals on January 30, 2020 in a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Coyotes.

Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-86393244668569048892020-09-02T20:40:00.000-05:002020-09-02T20:40:18.841-05:00Redemption Returns from 2017-18 Artifacts
Now here's a blog post that is WAY overdue. 2017-18 Artifacts came out three years ago, but I am just now getting around to posting about the redemption returns. I am always good about scanning cards in to the computer, and uploading them to a drafted Blogger post, but sometimes they just stay there, totally neglected, almost never to be revealed.

Anyway, I'll get to it. I pulled two rookie redemptions and a jersey patch redemption from the box. You don't know who these players will be, since the product is released before the NHL season begins, and the before the players have a chance to play in their first NHL game.

The big hit was n Emerald jersey patch card of New Jersey Devils defenseman Will Butcher, numbered 59/99. The card looks great, and even though the jersey piece is plain white, the patch piece is perfect, showing three colors and is perfectly centered in the window. Butcher is the most successful of the three redemptions, playing for the NHL club full time for the past three seasons.

My basic rookie was a Wild Card, which could be from any team. This one turned out to be Filip Chlapik of the Ottawa Senators, numbered 502/799. Chlapik spent the last three seasons with the Senators organization, with 2019-20 being his most productive, scoring 3 goals and 3 assists in 31 games with the NHL squad.

Lastly, is an Emerald rookie of forward Nick Merkley, numbered 30/99. Merkley was with the Arizona Coyotes for one game during the 2017-18 season, and played four games for the New Jersey Devils before Covid shut the season down.

I'm not quite buying boxes like I used to, or even at all, really, but it is fun to go back and look at past successes. None of these would qualify as epic pulls, but I was happy with what I got back.
Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-54920132257086350822019-04-02T16:15:00.001-05:002019-04-02T16:15:05.543-05:00Affordable Group Break from Cardboard CollectionsI haven't really bought a whole lot of wax in the last year or so, but I do like to take place in the occasional group break, and Cardboard Collections' Affordable Group Break from a month or two ago afforded me the opportunity to get a few new cards at a pretty reasonable price.

For this break, the theme was "1995 Flashback," specifically 1995 Pinnacle products. One box each of Sportflix, Zenith, and Summit would be opened, and for a pretty low price, I decided to go for it, of course, picking my Chicago Cubs.

I ended up with 5 from Sportflix, 3 from Zenith, and just 1 from Summit/
My second team that I was randomed was the Cincinatti Reds. I did much better than them numberwise, getting 7 from Sportflix, Zenith, and Summit. The Reds also brought me my only insert of the break, a 21 Club cards of Pokey Reese.
Nothing earth-shattering from this break, but for a cheap price, these are always fun to do, and bring a few new TTM cards that I don't already haveMatt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-64088969439669700142019-02-06T15:29:00.001-06:002019-02-06T15:29:36.058-06:002017-18 Artifacts Box BreakWell, in the interest of getting fully caught up, here's a box of hockey cards that I opened up a year and a half ago, scanned, and never got around to posting.

Back at the beginning of the 2017-18 season, I picked up the first big product of the season, with Upper Deck Artifacts. Each box contains 8 packs of four cards, including 4 serial-numbered parallels and rookies, and three autograph or memorabilia cards. So much time had passed between when I opened the box and got back around to the scans, that it was almost like opening it a second time!

Anyway, here's a quick look at what I ended up pulling:

From the base cards, I pulled just one Penguin, Evgeni Malkin.

From the serial-numbered cards, I pulled a Brett Hull Emerald parallel numbered 31/99, Dale Hawerchuk SP 593/599, Charlie McAvoy Ruby Rookie 22/399, and Alexander Nylander Rookie 43/999. I was a big fan of Hull when I was a kid, so that was a great pull, and McAvoy was one of the top rookies in the league that season, so I did pretty well on these.

In addition to those four serial-numbered cards, there is also guaranteed to be one Rookie Redemption. Artifacts is released too early in the season to include rookies who would make their debut early in the season, so these are inserted with the idea that they will be produced and sent out after they make their NHL debuts. I pulled two, an Emerald parallel numbered to 99 of Arizona Coyotes right winger Nick Merkley and a Wild Card Redemption numbered to 999 for Ottawa Senators center Filip Chlapik. Both are currently playing in the AHL.

The first of my three hits was a dual jersey cards of St. Louis Blues center Ivan Barbashev numbered 342/999. He has spent parts of the past 3 seasons with the NHL team, but so far, has played all of 2018-19 with the Blues, scoring 6 goals and 8 assists in 49 games.

Next is a really cool Bob Probert dual jersey card, numbered 63/99. Probert was one of the premier enforcers in the game's history, splitting time between the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks. He finished his career with 3,300 penalty minutes, and in the final game at Joe Louis Arena, his family spread his ashes in the Red Wings penalty box.

Lastly was, I suppose, the big hit of the break, an Emerald parallel (numbered to 99) Rookie jersey patch card of New Jersey Devils defenseman Will Butcher. He has proven himself to be an NHL mainstay, being with the team for all of the past two seasons, and has scored 3 goals and 19 assists in 51 games so far this year.
Well hat's it for this box of cards...that I opened up almost a year and a half ago. Nothing too spectacular, but still, a nice stroll down memory lane for me.Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-84295779599882388722018-12-15T14:46:00.000-06:002018-12-15T14:46:20.184-06:00A Visit to Wrigley FieldSo, after being a Chicago Cubs fan for almost 30 years, I finally made the pilgrimage to the "Friendly Confines" of Wrigley Field.

I first became a fan of the team way back in 1989. I was almost 9 years old, and since we moved around a lot when I was younger due to my dad's job, I never really had a "home team." I played Little League, just like any young American boy would at that age, but 1989 was when I began to consume the game as a fan. The Cubs were good that year, and more importantly, they were accessible. Even though I was living in Granbury, TX (Rangers Country), we had WGN, which meant that when I was home from school during the summer break, and watching TV during the day, I was watching the Cubs. Of course, I was 8 1/2 years old, and had no idea what I was getting myself into, but the Cubs quickly became my favorite team.

Fast forward 29 years, I am now married (11 1/2 years and counting) with three little girls (9, 6, and 3 years old). My wife, of course, knows about my love for the team, and many times during the early years of my marriage, questioned the logic of my loyalty to a team that always fell short. I always told her that one say they would win it all, and I will have gone into that victory as a loyal, long-time supporter, who never lost faith. That dream would come true for me in 2016 (and the following year, we watched her Houston Astros win the World Series, so it has been a good couple of seasons for the Pederson household).

Anyway, as we began to make our vacation plans for the upcoming 2018 year, out of the blue she suggested, "We should go to Chicago." I was taken a little by surprise, as it would clearly be a trip mostly for me, with her along for the ride, but when I looked at the calendar, it seems as though the stars had aligned in my favor. My job has a Dupont Schedule, which means we work on 12-hour rotating shifts, switching between days and nights. It also ends up working out that we get a week off every 28 day rotation, and the St. Louis Cardinals were in town right in the middle of my April week off. The decision was made, and we begun making our plans.

Our plan was to make a 10-hour drive from Moorhead, MN to Chicago, instead of flying, to save money. We'd drive Sunday to Madison, WI, then finish the drive Monday morning, hit up games Monday night, Tuesday night, and Wednesday afternoon (the entire Cubs/Cardinals 3-game series), then head back home Thursday. Of course, you can never predict the weather, especially when a blizzard hits Minneapolis and most of Wisconsin on your first travel day. The 6 1/2 hours it would normally take to get us to Madison became 11 hours, but luckily the weather was better the next day. We made it into Chicago, checked into our Airbnb (which was 2 1/2 blocks away from Wrigley Field!), and got ready just in time to find out that Monday night's game would be postponed to July 21.

Of course, it was a bit of a let-down, but there were still two games on the schedule, so we decided to make the most of the evening. At my suggestion, we walked over to Wrigley Field anyway, just to check out the area. The first things we saw were the pennant-shaped Chicago Cubs sign on the back of the bleachers and the Harry Caray statue, and of course, we had to get a picture on the other side of the stadium in front of the iconic red Wrigley Field sign.

As we walked around the stadium, I couldn't help but realize how different it is from others I have been to. There are no parking lots or open areas nearby. It is a stadium put down right in the middle of a bustling commercial area, with apartments and businesses surrounding it on all sides.

We ate dinner a block or two away at Cozy Noodles and Rice, a Cubs-themed Thai restaurant, and then headed back the way we came and stopped at Murphys Bleachers for a beer. I had to hit up Murphys at least once on our trip. It is a bar right across the street from Wrigley, and is the go-to place for some social interaction before and after games. When they showed the reaction shots during 2016's game 7 of a Chicago Bar, that's the bar they were showing. I figured a cold, rainy off-day would be the best time to go in and have a quick beer, just to say I went there.

After we were done there, we kept walking around the outside of the field. It was very cold, and had rained earlier in the say, so when we came across a building that was open, we decided to step inside for a minute. Now, the doors to this building were unlabeled, but we were able to see a few trophies through the windows. When we went inside, the receptionist asked "Can I help you?" My wife said we just wanted to get warm and take a look at the trophies. The receptionist,, who was very nice about it, told us that this was a management office and wasn't open to the public, so be quick about it. It soon dawned on me, that this was THE management office, as in the one that Theo, Jed, and Tom run the team out of. The trophies on one of the walls were Gold Glove trophies from various years, and the big one in the middle of the lobby was the 2016 National League Championship Trophy!

After that, we went to a nearby bar in the are that had a free stand-up comedy show. It was what you would expect from a free show. There actually weren't any horrible acts, but nothing that had us on the floor, either. It was then time to call it a night and try for better luck the next day.

Tuesday morning, I began checking my phone every 10 or 15 minutes to see if that game was being postponed, as well. It was still cold, but no rain, so it looked like we would be in luck!

We bundled up for a cold evening game that would only get colder, and walked the 2 1/2 blocks to Wrigley Field. We didn't do much earlier in the day, because I wanted to be sure we got there extra early. This being my very first game, I wanted to be sure I had time to take it all in. Wrigley was a ghost town the night before, but on game day, the whole neighborhood was full of life. There were memorabilia vendors on every street corner and tourists (like us) taking pictures. There was red and blue as far as the eye could see, and the Wrigley Faithful were ready for a great day of baseball.

Of course, we had to say hello to some "old friends," grabbing photos of the four statues of Cubs legends Ernie Banks, Harry Caray, Ron Santo, and Billy Williams, The cool thing about the statues, apart from their remarkable likenesses, is that the metal was colored in, but just on the red and blue parts.

When we make it into the stadium, I head right over to the Cubs Authentic store. I wanted to mark this momentous occasion with a specific souvenir, and pre-order a game-used ball from my very first game at Wrigley Field. Of course, I also checked out a few other items there, which included balls from previous games, used hats, and bats, and a rack of reasonably-priced team-issued jerseys. I decided to just get the ball, and then we made our way to get "first game" item number two, a custom "My First Visit" certificate. This item would be short-lived, though as beer (not mine) ended up being spilled two rows behind us, and dribbled down to where it lay.

Of course, I got us bleacher seats, and paid a pretty decent price, considering they were playing the Cardinals. I guess it helps when you are planning for an early-season April game. We settled in on the third row of the third section over in the left field, and got our first look at the inside of "the friendly confines." Having seen games in the somewhat recent past in Minneapolis's Target Field and Houston's Minute Maid Park, what struck me right away was the difference between those modern parks and one that has lasted for generations. The It really is an open field, with a just a few video screens to bring it into the 21st century, and of course, there's the iconic manually-operated scoreboard in centerfield, keeping fans updated on the day's scores from across the league, as well as three flag poles that signify the standings of the three National League Divisions.
I was sure to get there early, wanting to catch batting practice, and maybe a BP ball or two, but unfortunately, neither team took BP right before the game. As the game time grew nearer, I did get an up-close view of Tyler Chatwood warming up with Willson Contreras.
Baseball is always a great game to watch in person, and especially at such a ballpark. I live in Minnesota, and the Cubs haven't had any interleague games here in quite a while, so this was my first chance to see guys like Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Kyle Schwarber, and Ben Zobrist in person. It was a close game, for the most part, until a three-run 8th inning by the Cardinals sealed the deal on a 5-3 Cubs loss. We did get to see a Javy Baez home run, thought, and my wife even got me another gift.

At the end of the third inning, I left my seat to go get another beer, as well as make room in my bladder for said beer. Now, between innings, one of the coaches would come out from the bullpen area and throw the ball around with Schwarber, who was playing left field. As the inning would begin, they would throw the ball into the stands. Someone very close to where we were sitting caught it, and my wife, who is way bolder then I could ever be, asked the guy if she could have it for her husband who is a huge Cubs fan. The guy actually gave it to her, as just catching one was enough of a thrill for him, and needless to say, I got quite the surprise when I returned to my seat with my Bud Light.

This, along with the gamer that I preordered before the game, made two baseballs I would be going home with. This one may not have technically been used in in-game action, but it was "handled" by Kyle Schwarber.

Needless to say, it was a great experience for my first game at Wrigley Field, and after barely escaping hypothermia, it was time to head back to our place and get ready for one more game the next day.

Or so we thought...

Weather would strike once again, as the second game out of three would be cancelled due to weather. The cold temperature, combined with a heavy morning rain, made it a not-so-great day for baseball. It could have been a major bummer, but fortunately for us, the game was rescheduled for the very next day at noon. Now, we were planning on Thursday morning to head back home, but we decided that the best thing for us to was to check out of our place in the morning, pack up our car, and head to the game, leaving for home just a little bit later than we originally planned.

I would get another game at Wrigley Field, but more importantly, I would get a day game.

As we did Monday, we decided to make the most of our change of plans. After researching different attractions around the city, as well as which would be most accessible, we decided to head to the Shedd Aquarium. Since this was basically a trip for me and my lifelong dream of seeing Wrigley Field, our "off day" was given to her. She loves taking our girls to the zoos we have up here, so when the opportunity came to see a different type of wildlife, it wasn't a tough decision to make.

The aquarium itself is really interesting. Like most, you have a lot of the smaller fish tanks, with aquatic wildlife from all over the world. We also saw penguins, otters, rays and dolphins. The big draw for this aquarium, though, are the beluga whales. We were lucky enough to catch them at feeding time, where the five whales each go to their specific trainer, who they can identify based on a placard attached to their feeding bucket, and the trainers got them to even do a few tricks!

We closed out the aquarium and before having dinner at Giordano's, and I made sure we got a picture with the Cloud Gate sculpture.

Thursday would be a new day in more ways than one, as the rain stopped, the clouds opened up, and the sun came out. Wrigleyville was buzzing, and it was a great day for baseball!

After checking out of our Airbnb and loading up our car, we headed back to the ballpark for a Wrigley Field day game! Wrigley didn't have lights until, I think, 1988 and still keep the day game tradition going and it is still a big draw for the team. The weather was still cool, but with the sun out and softer wind, it was perfect.

The game itself was great. The floodgates really opened from the Cubs' bats, as a Jason Heyward home run and several well-placed hits with runners on, put the Cubs up to a 8-1 lead by the end of the fifth inning. St. Louis tried to rally, scoring four more in the seventh, but it wasn't enough, as the Cubs came away with a 8-5 win.
Time was running short on us, as we had a long drive ahead, but there was one more stop I had to make: the Motorola Trophy Room. It is located near the park right outside Wrigley, where they have a two-story team shop and a few other businesses. It houses a few really cool pieces of Cubs history, like John Lester and Javy Baez's 2016 NLCS co-MVP trophies and the 1984 NL MVP award of my favorite Cub growing up, Ryne Sandberg.
Of course, everyone who was there, was there to see the big one: the 2016 World Series Trophy. When you think of the history of the trophy, and the team who won it, it truly is a landmark to a team and a fanbase, that never gave up.
Sadly, the trip came to an end, and it was time to return to normal life. The experience, and Wrigley Field itself, was everything I hoped it could be. It took me 37 years to make it there, but it definitely won't take 37 for me to return.Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-56112018533482107182018-12-13T18:08:00.002-06:002018-12-13T18:08:45.681-06:00Lee Smith, Hall of Famer

A little belated, but congratulations to former Chicago Cubs pitcher Lee Smith, who was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame this past weekend by the Today's Game Era Committee.

He played for 18 seasons with 8 teams, and was one of the first pitchers to master the role of closer, as it transitioned from just another reliever to a one-inning specialist. He held the career saves record of 478 until 2006, when it was broken by Trevor Hoffman (inducted in 2018) and later, Mariano Rivera (likely to be elected by the BBWA in 2019).

I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times during Cubs Spring Traning games in Mesa, AZ, where he was signing autographs to benefit the Fergie Jenkins Foundation. He truly is one of the nicest, friendliest guys you could meet. He loved talking about his career and the game of baseball with whoever stopped by, and always had a smile on his face.

Anyway, last month, I participated in my first group break in quite a long time, when Colbey at Cardboard Collections hosted one of his famous Affordable Group Breaks. Now, with most of these that he does, you can expect a lot of base and inserts, with a few hits, as that is the only way to really keep the cost down.

This one would prove to be an exception, as he was able to find a hit-only product as one of the boxes. 2004 Topps Clubhouse Collection was a 10-pack-per-box product, where each pack contained two cards that were either an autograph or memorabilia card, which by itself would provide 20 hits! Alongside that was 2002 Topps Gallery. Of course, Gallery wouldn't give us the hit count, but it is advertised as an "All-Painted" set, and the cards look amazing, so I was in.

I got in early, so I was able to claim the Chicago Cubs. We were also given a random team, which for me, was the Oakland Athletics. I wasn't really interested in the A's and tried to shop them around. I ended up holding on to them, and it's a good thing, two, as the A's had THREE memorabilia cards pulled from Clubhouse Collection, including two Hall-of-Famers.

Dennis Eckersley and Rickey Henderson were the big two, as both have been enshrined in Cooperstown, and Tim Hudson was a pretty good pull as well. While I wasn't too excited about the A's initially, they ended up being a great team to have, as the Cubs had a big goose egg in the hit department for this break.

The Cubs did, however, come through big with the base cards in the Gallery box. I got nine of them, including some of my all-time favorites, like Ryne Sandberg and Kerry Wood. The A's didn't give me anything too special here, other than another Tim Hudson card, so I suppose there was some level of balance between the two products.

The big hit of the break ended up being a Lou Gehrig bat card from Clubhouse Collection. I may have missed out on that one, but any time you can come away from a break at this price point with three hits, you know you've had a good one.Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-47198172022997678332018-03-21T22:06:00.000-05:002018-03-21T22:06:07.604-05:002017 WWE Heritage Box BreakSo, this post is a few months overdue, but better late than never, I guess. I bought this box of 2017 WWE Heritage last fall, as I was looking forward to a nearby house show in Grand Forks, ND. Now, I have been a wrestling fan for about 25 years, and was right in the middle of the "Attitude Era," but this would actually be my very first live event to attend in person!

Feeling the WWE fever, I decided to pick up some WWE-related cardboard. I went with Heritage, mostly because I love the 1987 Topps design. Based on the last three years of this product, each release is based on the design from 30 years prior, which means I'll be underwhelmed by 2018, but will LOVE 2019 Heritage.

What I really liked is how they incorporated so much from the 1987 baseball design, including the all-rookie team trophy for newcomers to the main roster, "Future Stars" for their NXT wrestlers, and the All-Star design for the Legends.

There are quite a few parallels, including bronze, which just features a darker finish to the wood grain of the wood design.

I also got one parallel of one of my favorite wrestlers, singers, and podcast hosts, Chris Jericho, which is serial-numbered 14/25

I pulled four John Cena Tribute cards. These aren't taken from a previous design, though. They are just modern-looking cards looking at Cena's various career achievements/

These Summerslam All Stars cards pay tribute to wrestlers who have made an impact at the annual event. I believe these are taken from a WWE card design from the '80s, but I'm not 100% sure of that.

Summerslam was a big theme with Heritage, as they also included a number of Thirty Years of Summerslam inserts. While the All Star cards focus on the individuals, this set focuses on the moments themselves.

Lastly, the Bizarre Summerslam Matches cards focus on, well, just that, like these here about a Dog Food Match and a Jail House match. Yes, believe it or not, pro wrestling can be a bit silly at times.

Now, to the hits! My first is a manufactured patch of NXT wrestler Eric Young, numbered 142/299. Young is te leader of the Sanity faction, which is one of my favorites. Hopefully we'll see them making the jump to the main roster real soon.

Lastly is my big hit of the box, an autographed card of Ember Moon, numbered 68/99. At the time I pulled this, I though that she was in line to take over the NXT women's division with Asuka being called up to the main roster, and I was right. She won the NXT Women's Championship in November, and is now the focal point of the division.

Well, that's it for this one. Glad I finally got these posted.

Like I said, this was purchased in part, because of the WWE Live Event I attended last fall, and here's a few pictures I took while I was there.
I picked these up a while back, and I can't remember exactly how much I paid, but I was very happy with my purchase.

The first card is from 2015-16 Ultimate. I think what they did a lot of with this set for the hits was take the base cards, and throw an autograph here, and a memorabilia piece there, and there ya go. With this one, we have a really low serial number (15/15) combined with an on-card autograph, and a memorabilia swatch, which I'm pretty sure is a piece of a skate. Any time I can get a piece that is something besides a jersey, I definitely grab it up.

The next one isn't quite as spectacular, but one I'm still happy to add to the collection. From 2016-17 SPX's Impressions insert, this one is numbered 20/99, and features a sticker autograph of Parise. Sure, it isn't as flashy as the other one, but for just a couple bucks, I'll take it!

That's it for now. I'm sure I'll be picking up plenty more in the near future, adn will certainly show them off when I do.

Kuhnhackl was drafted by the Penguins 110th overall in the 2010 Entry Draft. It took him a few years to make it to the NHL, but in his rookie season of 2015-16 he scored 5 goals and 10 assists in 42 games, on the way to the Stanley Cup. In 2016, he became only the third German-born player to win the Stanley Cup, following Uwe Krupp and Dennis Seidenberg. The following year, Kuhnhackl won his second Stanley Cup, and became the first German-born player to win it twice with the same team.Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-74396147872787271692017-08-21T14:46:00.000-05:002017-08-21T14:46:15.733-05:002016-17 Ultimate Collection Box Break #2Well, after a too-good-to-be-true opening of my first box of 2016-17 Ultimate, I had to try another. Of course, I wasn't expecting anything near as epic as that autographed Auston Matthews cards, but I was still curious as to what a "normal" box of this product would bring.

Like I said in the last post, each box of Ultimate contains one four-card pack. Of those four cards, there will be one base or insert, one memorabilia card, one autograph or premium relic card, and one rookie autograph.

Let's get to it!

Matthew Benning Ultimate Introductions
Benning might not be the most well-known young player on the Oilers team, but he has definitely made his mark. After spending two games in the AHL to start the season, he was called up to the NHL, and played 62 games for the Oilers, scoring three goals and 12 assists. He also had three assists in Edmonton's 12 playoff games. Like I said, not the biggest name, but at least he's an NHL regular.

Mark McNeill Ultimate Rookies Jersey 181/249
McNeill is featured on this card as a Blackhawk, but has played just one game for the team, in the 2015-16 season. He was traded to the Dallas Stars as part of the deal that brought Johnny Oduya back to Chicago, and played just one game for Dallas this past season, spending most of the year in the AHL.

Sonny Milano Ultimate Rookies Autograph 148/299
Well, second box of Ultimate, and second card of Milano. At least it's a different one, as the other was an Ultimate Introductions insert card.

Gerry Cheevers Keystone Fabrics 1/49
Cheevers had an amazing career, won two Stanley Cups, and was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985, but is mostly remembered for his mask. What started as a plain white mask became iconic, when he began adding a row of stitches each time the puck hit him in the mask, representing all the times it saved him from having to put stitches on his actual face. In 2008, The Hockey News ranked his mask No. 1 overall by a wide margin, earning 221 of 300 possible points, far surpassing second-place Gilles Gratton's 66 points.

Like I said, I knew I wasn't going to get anything near as great as the last one, but I still did pretty well. An on-card autographed jersey card of a hockey Hall-of-Famer is pretty great.Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-86383072164109550342017-07-30T18:36:00.000-05:002017-07-30T18:36:03.100-05:002016-17 Ultimate Collection Box Break (MAJOR Auston Matthews Hit!!!)It's been a while since I picked up a box of cards from my LCS, and even longer since I got some hockey cards, but I stopped in yesterday, and got a box of 2016-17 Upper Deck Ultimate. I haven't gotten too much of this in the past, but I was feeling good about it today, so I decided to give it a try.

Each box of Ultimate contains just one four-card pack. Of those four cards, there will be one base or insert, one memorabilia card, one autograph or premium relic card, and one on-card rookie autograph. The price point is a bit high for the amount of cards you get, but there are some big rewards to be had if you hit big on a top rookie or hall-of-famer.

Here's what I got:

Sonny Milano Ultimate Introductions
This card doesn't scan well at all, but it actually looks really cool in person. It seems to have a clear overlay on top of the card's surface, and has foil printing on the Ultimate logo and the Ultimate Introductions title, which don't show up on the scan. He's a player who has only played in seven NHL games in the last two seasons, but it's still a cool card to have.

Anthony Beauvillier Ultimate Rookies Jersey 212/249
You'll see something very similar with the next three cards, mainly that they have the exact same design. between the autograph and jersey cards, they are pretty much identical, apart from the jersey swatch or autograph. Anyway, this one is of New York Islanders left winger Anthony Beauvillier, and features a blue jersey swatch from the Islanders' home sweaters.

Tyler Motte Ultimate Rookies Autograph 82/299
As you can see, these are pretty much identical to the jersey cards. The only two differences, really, are the shading in the background, and of course, an autograph instead of a piece of fabric. Anyway, this one is of Tyler Motte, who split time between the NHL and AHL last season. He'll get a new chance with a new team in 2017-18, as he went to Columus along with Artemi Panarin as part of the deal that brought Brandon Saad back to Chicago.

Auston Matthews Ultimate Rookies Autograph 33/99
OK, so I kind of freaked out a little bit when I pulled this card. I opened up the box, and I could tell that it seemed a little bit on the thin side, as if there definitely wasn't going to be any kind of insane patch card. Knowing that, I was hoping for at least a decent autograph, and boy, did I find it. Matthews was the No. 1 overall selection in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, and burst into the league in a big way, scoring four goals in his NHL debut! He went on to finish the season with 40 goals and 29 assists in 82 games, on the way to winning the Calder Trophy as the NHL Rookie of the Year.
I may be a little swayed in my opinion of this product because if the big card that I pulled, but I think it's probably hit or miss. If it had been anyone else, I might have a different opinion, but then again, who knows what other great cards I would have found. If you have a little extra to spend, it's worth the chance, but this is definitely a high risk/high reward product.Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-39032916676080077082017-07-29T19:32:00.003-05:002017-07-29T19:32:43.037-05:00Let's Make A Deal! So, I haven't really much more than a couple trades in quite a while, so I'm hoping to drum up some activity here. Take a look at what I have in my various trade bait folders and see if anything grabs you.
I thought the designs were great, the inserts look phenomenal, and the hits really gave me a good bang for my buck.

I also began looking on Ebay for some affordable hits that I could add to my collection. I found some great cards at some great prices, but what really sparked my curiosity was this quad-relic card of Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras. It's from the Diamond Deco insert set and is numbered 30/49.

I can easily identify the wooden bat piece, and the solid white fabric as part of his uniform, but what really drew me to this was the two swatches of black and white fabric, that are a little tougher for me to identify and origin. I can't tell exactly what kind of fabric the white part of it is, but the black part has a little bit of a rubbery feel, as is whatever it is, it is used for a grip, or to hold the item in place better. Maybe a batting glove, or the waistband of his pants? Jock strap?
I was very surprised to hear that the team decided they would be moving on from their long-time captain, Shane Doan, and did not offer him a contract for next season. He has always been loyal to the franchise, and decided to stick with the struggling team, despite many times when he could have (and probably should have) left to play for a Stanley Cup contender. He was also one of the greatest ambassadors that the game has seen, especially in the state of Arizona, as he was always making appearances for the team and promoting the game in the area. I got the chance to meet him a couple of times after games, as he always stopped to sign autographs for the fans after Coyotes games, win or lose, and always with the biggest smile on his face. He may still have another year or two left in him, so hopefully another team is willing to give him a shot at his first Stanley Cup.
For this one, it is not a Cub, but someone who I still loved as a young baseball fan:
From 2005 Upper Deck Classics, this is a Classic Materials jersey card of Kent Hrbek. I just had to have this card, because at the time, I didn't really have any hits of the former Minnesota Twins slugger. I may be a lifelong Cubs fan, but I grew up in a Minnesota Twins househoold, and in fact, one of my very first baseball memories was them winning the 1987 World Series. Hrbek was a big part of both of those teams, and I have always been a fan of his. What I really like about this card is that not only does it feature a little bit of the jersey's pinstripe, but there is also some threading from the hem, which gives it that extra something special.Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-89956480464247009312017-05-27T22:59:00.001-05:002017-05-27T22:59:14.828-05:00My 2016-17 Artifacts RedemptionsAt the beginning of the season, I picked up two boxes of 2016-17 Upper Deck Artifacts. Of those two boxes, I pulled a total of 3 redemptions. Now, these weren't the typical ones where the athlete hasn't found the time to sign, but the ones where the released the product before the new athletes played in an NHL game, and thus couldn't have a hockey card until they do.
Anyway, truth be told, I set my redemptions aside and forgot about them until a couple of weeks ago. By the time I entered them in, they had already been produced, so it wasn't long at all before they were on their way.

Anyway, here is what I got back:

First up is what I got in return for an Emerald Jersey Patch card of "Rookie V."

While there was no telling who the card would be of early on, it ended up being of Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski. IT is numbered 85/99 and the cool thing about Blue Jackets sweaters is that they have some great patch pieces, like this one, which appears to be from the point of the star on the upper right corner.

Next, is what I got for my Chaicago Blackhawks Rookie:

This one is of Tyler Motte, and in numbered 496/799. As a University of North Dakota Hockey fan, I was hoping it would be Nick Schmaltz, but maybe Motte will turn out to be a great player, as well. He split time between the NHL and AHL last season, but didn't make an appearance in the playoffs.

Lastly, is one that I thought was lackluster, but turned out to be pretty great, a "Wild Card" redemption.

The wild cards are designed for teams who have more than one big-time rookie on their roster. I hit big with this one, too, getting a card of Toronto Maple Leafs right wing Mitch Marner, numbered 495/799. Despite a lot of hype for him coming into this season, Marner gets a wild card spot, because he is on the same team with #1 overall pick Auston Matthews. He still had a great first year, though, scoring 19 goals and 42 assists in 77 games. The wild cards are sometimes more miss than hit, but in this case, I got a good one.

That's it for this year in Artifacts. I'll see what 2017-18 brings, but as the first mid-range product of the season, I'll definitely pick up a box or two when it gets released in the fall.Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-39251495223275257462017-05-21T10:19:00.001-05:002017-05-21T10:19:09.325-05:0030-Day Baseball Card Challenge - Day 6Day 6 - A card you spent more than $10 to get
I actually, don't remember what I spent on this card, but I know it was more than $10.

From 2012 Panini Prime Cuts, this is an autographed jersey card of Chicago Cubs legend Ernie Banks, numbered 7/10. It is a sticker autograph, which always goes a little cheaper than the on-card variety, which is nice for that reason. What's really cool about the card, though, is the jersey swatch. First of all, his name is cut out, which is a feature I always love. secondly, this is the old-timey fabric, which really looks lime more of a memorabilia piece than just a piece of fabric. Thirdly, if you look toward the bottome of the fabric, you will see a seam, which really gives it that extra touch. Like I said, I really don't remember how much I spent on this exactly, but I still think it is worth every penny I paid for it.Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-12152335387092505662017-05-18T22:20:00.001-05:002017-05-18T22:20:38.170-05:0030-Day Baseball Card Challenge - Day 5Day 5 - A certified autograph card of one of your favorite players
Now, my all-time favorite player is Ryne Sandberg. Unfortunately, I only have one certified auto of his, and I'm saving that one for a later post. Luckily, this one has to do with "one of" my favorite players, so I can post this beauty from another favorite Cub from my era, Kerry Wood.
Wood entered the Majors with a bang, tying Roger Clemens' record of 20 strikeouts in a game in only his fifth major league start. He was set to be the cubs' fireball pitcher of the future, but missed what would have been his second season in the Majors after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. He would return and eventually regain his momentum, leading the league in strikeouts, with 266 in 2003. He would later on play for the Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees, but returned to the cubs for the 2011 season. He retired in 2012, and played his last game on May 18 of that year. He faced just one batter that game, who he struck out.Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-14781133533612942882017-05-15T08:53:00.000-05:002017-05-15T08:53:29.380-05:002017 Diamond Kings Box Break #2After being impressed with one box of 2017 Diamond Kings, I decided to try my hand at another, and boy, am I glad I did. Not only is this still such a great-looking set of cards, but I ended up with an even better box this time around!

One thing I really didn't get into in the first box was the SP variations that I pulled. There isn't really anything new with this idea, just different pictures and they are a little tougher to find. They have 25 different cards with variations. Here's an example of some that I pulled from this box:

I pulled both versions of Kirby Puckett's card, to give you a look at the differences. Sometimes you'll get different poses, while other times it's different uniforms. Here we have pictures of early-career Puckett and late-career Puckett. On the non-rookie cards, they also changed the back to make it easier to identify which one is the regular card (square frame) and the SP variation (round frame).

Like the last box, I pulled five paper-framed parallels, with four non-numbered ones (Madison Bumgarner, Paul Waner, Khris Davis, and Yoan Moncada), and one serial-numbered card (red-paper-framed A.J. Pollock 7/99)

The inserts were the same as the previous box, but the number of each that I pulled was different. I only pulled two Aurora cards: Mike Trout and Max Scherzer

One of my favorites, Heritage Collection, gave me four cards: Ozzie Smith, Eddie Murray, Rod Carew, and Tony Gwynn

There were two Memorable Moments cards of big home run games for the Yankees. These two focus on Reggie Jackson hitting 3 home runs in a game and Lou Gehrig hitting 4 home runs in a game.

Lastly for the inserts is Originals, which puts a new look to an old format with Diamons Kings. The four I pulled were Kris Bryant, Mike Trout, Corey Kluber, and Freddie Freeman

Each box promised two hits, and like the last one, both were pretty good ones to pull. The first is a Limited Lithos autographed dual jersey card of Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling numbered 34/49. I can't say I know a whole lot about this guy, but when compared to what most guys do nowadays, he has a great-looking signature, which makes this card even better.

Lastly, is my best hit out of both boxes, a dual patch card of Chicago Cubs top prospect Eloy Jimenez, numbered 13/25. Jimenez may have another year or two before he cracks the major league roster, but with a great year in A-ball last season and an impressive performance at the 2016 All-Star Futures Game, he'll be ready when the call comes. Not only is this card of a soon-to-be-great player, but the two patch pieces look amazing. The one on the left most likely comes from the logo on the front of the jersey, and the one on the right is probably from a number. You can even see a bit of a pinstripe, as well.

another great box at a fantastic price.
I wasn't raised a Cubs fan, but I became one at the age of 9 thanks to WGN and Harry Caray. I was too young to understand a lot of the intricacies of the game, but I did know thaqt this guy was the best on the team, and he became my favorite player. As a young card collector, I picked up whatever cards of his I could, but most of them were the recent releases. This one eluded me for a long time, mostly because of the price. It probably never got above$30, even during the peak of his career, but for a kid in elementary school, it was WAY out of my price range. It was my first "white whale," and there was a great sense of satisfaction when I finally purchased the card as an adult.

I'm going to tweak this one a little bit. Truthfully, I don't remember what the very first set that I tried to complete was, so instead, I'll tell you about the first set of cards that I really got into for my pack buying as a young collector.

Looking back on it now, 1988 was a rough year for cards. It's right at the beginning of the "junk wax" era, the designs were mostly pretty boring, and the rookie class was very slim. The one bright spot for me as a young collector was 1988 Donruss. As an 8-year-old, I loved the design. It had a futuristic look to it, and most importantly to me at the time, the alternating corner designs fit together like a puzzle when you put them in a binder. How cool is that!

Of course, almost 30 years later, I see them for what they are in full context, but the 8-year-old version of me thought these were AMAZING!Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-68209502960681656522017-05-01T16:43:00.000-05:002017-05-01T16:43:18.193-05:0030-Day Baseball Card Challenge - Day 230-Day Baseball Card Challenge - Day 2: A card with more than one player on it.

I had a few to pick from, and was looking at some vintage cards, when I remembered that I had this beauty. It's a Winning Materials dual jersey card of Ken Griffey, Jr. and Jim Edmonds from 2009 SPX.

I chose this one, because it's an incredibly unique card in that it features two players, but four teams. Griffey is pictured as a Cincinnati Red, but listed as a member of the Chicago White Sox, and Edmonds is pictured as a St. Louis Cardinal, but listed as a Chicago Cub. Griffey was traded from the Reds to the White Sox at the trade deadline in July 2008, and Edmonds left the cardinals and signed a 1-year contract with the Cubs in May of that year. Despite this being a 2009 product, I guess there wasn't enough time for Upper Deck to get updated photos of them.

The only other card I have that 1-ups this one is a hockey card of Marian Hossa that has him listed as a Detroit Red Wing, pictured as a Pittsburgh Penguin, and has a jersey swatch from his time with the Atlanta Thrashers.Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7556656199032802281.post-17886627855663773332017-04-30T22:21:00.002-05:002017-04-30T22:21:41.776-05:0030 Day Baseball Card Challenge - Day 1

So, I know I'm late to the party on this one. The truth is, when Tony at Off Hiatus Baseball started this idea, I really wanted to get in, but at the time, the only 2017 baseball cards I had purchased was a jumbo box of Series 1. It would definitely give me enough cards to write about, but not enough variety. Since, then, I have purchased Heritage, Donruss, and Diamond Kings, so I decided now would be the perfect time to get involved with this really cool topic.

As you can see, Day 1 is a card from the current year with a photo you like.

Well, I'm a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, so of course, it has to be THIS one:

And since a picture is worth 1,000 words, I think that's all I have to say about that.Matt Pedersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09097177365686560651noreply@blogger.com1
